Over the Christmas holidays at Fast Lap, Luca met Evan who was his age and really quick on the track too. They were both lapping at under 28 seconds consistently – it was quite impressive to watch. They have become firm friends. I started speaking to his father Dan who told me that Ruben had his own Comer 80 kart and had been racing up at the speedway for almost a year. It turns out that Evan was as obsessed as Luca was of Formula 1 and Dan had decided to give him the opportunity to test his skill at the speedway. They race once a month over the course of 2 days; Saturday is practice; Sunday is qualifying and 2 races for points that count for the National Karting Championship.
It turns out that Evan is very good. So good that he had secured a new kart from Ital Corse America and would I be interested in buying his kart for Luca. My interest was piqued! He said that we should join them for the next race weekend at the beginning of April to get a feel for the atmosphere and the racing. So I went out to scout the track, armed with my cameras and a very enthusiastic 10 year old and was duly impressed.
A great track, great set up, great people .. we are hooked!
And this will be his new kart.
I have to find a way to make this work for Luca …
